The University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science announces its membership in the AI Alliance, an international community dedicated to advancing open, safe and responsible artificial intelligence (AI). With the addition of more than 20 new members, the AI Alliance now brings together a diverse mix of academia, startups, enterprises and scientific organizations from around the world.
As part of its commitment to the AI Alliance, Penn Engineering will actively participate in two member-driven working groups: AI Safety and Trust Tooling, and AI Policy Advocacy. These groups aim to address the challenges of generative AI and democratize its benefits by convening researchers, developers, policy experts and industry leaders.
The AI Safety and Trust Tooling working group will provide objective information and best practice guidance on AI safety, trust, ethics and cybersecurity. It will also work towards improving the state of the art for evaluation tools and establishing benchmarking capabilities for testing AI models and applications.
The AI Policy Advocacy working group will create a public forum to bring together the technical community and policymakers, fostering open innovation in AI. It will publish and disseminate information and opinions from AI Alliance members on key policy topics, representing the voices of the broader AI ecosystem reliant on open source and open innovation.
“Due to the proliferation of media stories about vulnerabilities and potential harm of AI, bridging the trust gap between developers of AI technology and skeptical users is critical to realize the promise of AI,” says Rajeev Alur, Zisman Family Professor in Computer and Information Science and Founding Director of the ASSET Center in Penn Engineering. “The AI Alliance, with its mission of bringing together industry and academia and its focus on transparency in innovation, can play a crucial supporting role. Penn Engineering’s recent initiative in Trustworthy AI, the ASSET (AI-Enabled Systems: Safe, Explainable, and Trustworthy) Center, is perfectly aligned with this mission, and we are delighted to join the effort.”
The AI Alliance, launched in December 2023, advocates for open technologies and encourages their adoption across industry, academia and government. By fostering an environment where AI can thrive, the AI Alliance aims to benefit people and society worldwide.
New members of the AI Alliance include Anaconda, Applied Digital, Citadel AI, Databricks / MosiacML, Domino Data Lab, Hitachi, Impact AI, Kera Health Platforms, LastMile AI, Lightning AI, MLOps Community, NEC Corporation, Northeastern University, Predibase, SeedAI, Snowflake, Inc., Uber, University at Buffalo, University of Pennsylvania, University of Technology in Poznan: Interdisciplinary Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity, University of Utah, Weights & Biases (ML/LLMops), and Zilliz.
