Exyn Technologies, a spin-off of the GRASP lab founded by Vijay Kumar, Nemirovsky Family Dean of Penn Engineering, develops software that allows flying robots to map and understand unfamiliar locations. Being able to navigate novel, dynamic environments without direct human oversight allows for a wide range of fully autonomous missions.
In a report by ABC6’s Brian Taff and Heather Grubola, Exyn team members show off how sensors and computation combine to allow flying robots to avoid moving obstacles and figure out how to get from point to point without the help of a pilot.
Its developers, including Exyn CEO Nader Elm, envision all kinds of ways their robot can do what humans so far cannot.
“So there’s obviously a lot of application for this technology,” said Elm.
From mapping vast underground mines, to surveying otherwise inaccessible landscapes, to navigating disaster zones too unsafe for people this technology can be both time saving and life-saving.
